Why this matters now…

Since the start of March 2020, managers across the health and social care system have been making the most difficult decisions of their lives:  whether to withdraw treatment from non-responsive patients; how to cope with the huge increase in demand as a GP and which sites to prioritise for essential cleaning services. These are typical of the dilemmas arising every day for clinicians and service managers.  The British Medical Association (BMA) and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) have each issued guidance on making ethical decisions.

Despite the help on hand, there are often no easy answers.   But this guide aims to highlight the factors likely to enhance or impair your decision-making under pressure; as well as some specific techniques which can help.
